The next Euro Fed Lipid Congress 2019 will be arranged in Seville, Spain, between 20 and 23 October. We request members of the Nordic Lipidforum to submit abstracts for poster session or oral presentation. Several sessions are very interesting for our members. This is a great opportunity to present your work.

Nordic Lipidforum member Cecilia Tullberg will defend her Phd-thesis on Friday 2 February 2018. The title of her work is Oxidation of marine oils during in vitro gastrointestinal digestion and its effects on stress in human intestinal Caco-2 cells. Cecilia has done her work at the Department of Biology and Biological Engineering – Food and Nutrition Science, Chalmers University of Technology. Prof. Ingrid Undeland has been Cecilias supervisor.
For those of you that have the possibility to witness Cecilias presentation, the defend will be held at Sal KC (Kemihuset, Chalmers, Gothenburg) 1000 o’clock.

The Nordic Lipidforum Young Scientist Award 2017 were this year awarded Elina Zailer from University of Würzburg, Marika Kalpio at University of Turku, and Ken Cheng from Sveriges Lantbruksuniversitet. The diploma was given to the awardees during the Nordic Lipidforum Symposium and EFL Congress dinner at Uppsala Castle.
12 participants attended the 5th Nordic Lipidforum Academy 2017, prior to the Symposium and the EFL Congress. The Academy was held at Biomedicinske Centrum at Uppsala University. The Lipidforum Academy has now been established as a tradition, and attendees both from industry and PhD-students from several universities from all over Europe, spend five days with lectures and project works. Hopefully the 6th Nordic Lipidforum Academy will take place prior to the 30th Nordic Lipidforum Symposium 2019 in Horsnes, Denmark!

The 29th Nordic Lipidforum Symposium 2017 is history! The Symposium was held in the beautiful town of Uppsala, Sweden. Chair of the board, prof. Ingrid Undeland, opened the Congress on Sunday 27 of August. This year The Nordic Lipidforum Symposium was arranged in conjunction with the 15th Euro Fed Lipid Congress.
After three and a half days with networking, social happenings and latest from research and innovation, the Symposium where round off on Wednesday 30 of August, by a lecture from professor Guðmundur Haraldsson. He was awarded the very first Nordic Lipidforum Honorary Lecturer.

More than 35 members attended the Nordic Lipidforum members meeting 2017, which were held during the Nordic Lipidforum Symposium in Uppsala Monday 28 August. Ingrid Undeland stepped down as Chair of the board, and Karsten Nielsen from Denmark accepted to Chair the board. Thanks to Ingrid for a great job during the last two years! Ann-Dorit Moltke Sørensen from DTU succeed Lars Hellgren as member of the board.

On the January 29th an animal study from University of Gothenburg showing increased cancer growth in mice supplemented with Vitamin E and N-acetylcystein, was published in Science Translational Medicine1. The study shows that tumour progression is markedly increased and survival time decreased in mice which were given the antioxidants after initiation of tumour development. These results are in accordance with earlier human studies, showing that smokers taking -carotene supplements had higher lung cancer incidence than smokers not taking any supplementation2. Data from the recent study indicate that the anti-oxidants protects the cancer-cells from the normal, reactive-oxygen species based defence system, that are used by the body to kill cancer cells. It does however not say anything on whether anti-oxidant supplements can increase protection of cancer formation, only that already established cancer-cells have increased survival and drive increased tumour progression.

In a recently published study, Cansell and co-workers show very clearly that the presence of triglycerides in the blood affects dopamine-signalling from the brain. This is part of the so called “reward-system”, which is very important in controlling preferences for palatable food. In the study, they show that infusing small amounts of triglycerides in the brain, this reduced the preference for palatable (sweet and fat) food and reduced their feed-seeking behaviour. This is might be an important finding, since it indicates that the triglyceride-peaks in the blood occurring after a meal is important in regulating appetite and preferences for energy-dense foodstuffs, and that increased strive after sugar and fat might be due to dysfunctions in this system.
